Harvest 2019 for Douloufakis Winery Dafnes, Crete, Greece
This year the grape harvest started on 16th of August, which is the regular date for Crete. The heavy rainfalls of last winter were conducive to our vineyards. Specifically, the 1200 mm in height of rain favored the verdure, resulting in sturdy plants, while foliage management was considered necessary. During summer a chilly and moisturing wind from Aegean Sea called "meltemi", contributed to a slow and steady grape ripening. Fortunately, there was no rain in summer and an average temperature of 30-32°C was our ideal ally during harvest. This year, the early ripening varieties were matured later than normal, while the late ripening grapes were matured earlier, which resulted in reduction of the harvest period.
Actually, the length of the harvest period reduced in extend from 25th of August until 15th of September. The grapes ripened properly, achieving good level of acidity, something that is extremely important for Crete. The yield varied within normal range. The good news is that young vines came into production this year yielding grapes of high quality. The harvest for Vidiano began on 27th of August, fully matured, with acidity that could help in its aging, which is Vidiano's greatest advantage!
